How Do Those Around You View Christianity?

To reach those around you with the gospel, you need to exegete the culture. You need to understand their worldview, their view of Christianity, and how to communicate the gospel in a way that is understandable to them.

Exegeting the culture starts with good research questions. Tom Steffen's detailed list of questions can be helpful in exegeting the culture wherever you live.

A friend of mine who lives in New York City shared with me about a conversation he had with one of his neighbors. The topic of Christianity took a unique twist when he said,

“I see no difference between a Christian pastor and a terrorist.”

If you were engaged in that conversation and you heard that statement, you would have an instant snapshot of their view of Christianity.

How would you respond?

Would you get defensive and unpack your Christian apologetics?

Would you ask questions to gain greater understanding of how this perspective was formed?

Would you quickly change the subject?

How would you communicate your commitment to following Jesus to someone who held such a view of Christianity?

Today's Missional Challenge: Become a student of those in the culture around you. Ask questions to discover their view of Christianity as you seek to make disciples.
