Welcome to Day 20 as you Take the Missional Challenge!

Take the Missional Challenge is a 31 Day experience designed to help align believers with Jesus’ mission. Each day’s post includes missional concepts and activities. For more information – click here.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Jesus sent His disciples to make disciples. He expects them to obey all that He commanded – and to teach others to lovingly obey Jesus.

So – where do you start?

George Patterson, a missionary for many years in northern Honduras, emphasized teaching and practicing obedience to Jesus’ commands above and before all else. He asked all converts to memorize the following list of Christ’s basic commands:

1. Repent and Believe (Mark 1:15)

2. Be baptized and continue in the new life it initiates (Matt 28:19-20; Acts 2:38; Rom 6:1-11)

3. Love God and neighbor in a practical way (Matt 22:37-40)

4. Celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:17-20)

5. Pray (Matt 6:5-15)

6. Give (Matt 6:19-21; Luke 6:38)

7. Disciple others (Matt 28:19-20)

By memorizing them, it helps to reinforce obedience in these basic areas in your life, and in the lives of those you are discipling.

Edward Aw, who was mentored by Patterson, notes – “If we say we love Jesus and we don’t know what to obey, how will we obey?”  Your maturity in Christ is measured by your obedience. These basic commands are a great place to start practicing obedience in your life and in your faith community.

DAY 20 ACTION STEP: Memorize Christ’s Specific Commands

  • Review the list of Specific Commands of Christ and scripture references list above.
  • Commit them to memory.
